Ever since I got my first money to pick out a toy in at Toys R Us or since my parents gave me coins to go to the local shop to buy some candy, I have been a consumer one way or another.
As a consumer I have gone through the stages of consuming for different reason and basing my choices on different kinds of emotions, values and experiences.
The product that have had to consume has also been for many different reasons and has changed a lot over time. 6 years ago i moved out of my parents house to a bigger city and my consumer behavior changed drastically. I was now on my own person how was choosing amongst products after my own wants, needs, experience and values with that brand.
Before moving out of my parents house all my money went to my hobbies, clothes and entertainment. And since I was making money working but still living at home, I saved money for my future apartment. I came to learn that it was a big change to go from just buying clothes and gears to paying for electricity, detergent and ketchup.
With those insights I had to prioritize and understand how I could plan and get the best value for the money, in that way I learned to be more economically aware. At the same time I also got more involved in how I could adjust my lifestyle to be kinder to the environment and that led to my consumer behavior changing along with that direction.
Consumer behavior is a forever-changing process and traditional demographics such as gender, age and location seems to matter less and values, identities, trends and cultures makes more matters. Marketers stand in front of a great challenge to understand these and make good research on how they can catch these sub-cultures interests.
Tell me about your consumer behavior and how it has come to change! And what kind of challenges do your see for marketers in the future?
All the best,
Isabelle
I agree that it is very different when you live at home vs when you go off on your own. Bills pile up and you become more concious of budgeting. I remember when I first bought cleaning supplies, gas and electricity for my student accomadation. I didnt realise how much it really was for these basic necessities ! It made me aware that I couldnt spend how i used to spend when i was living at home and these things were paid for... Interesting article Isabelle!
SvaraRaderaYour blog post says it all! Understanding consumer behavior is important to analyse how consumers and in the context of your post, web users respond to or interact with a particular website. However consumer behavior and the concept of user persona can be quite complex because each consumer has different mind and attitude towards what appeals to them.
